Major Lazer begint als het muzikale project van producer Diplo en dj Switch. Als de Nederlanders in 2011 de samenwerking verbreken, besluit Diplo onder de naam Major Lazer door te gaan. Free the Universe (2013) is het tweede studioalbum van Major Lazer, waarop Diplo er opnieuw flink op los goochelt met reggae, dancehall en dubstep.
