Trip Hop in 10 Albums
by Marc Zisman
At the dawn of the ’90s, the trip hop wave overtook the UK with an electronica sound influenced by Jamaican music and hip hop beats. With their chloroformed rhythms and heavy ambience, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba and several other outfits invented a kind of dark, futuristic and often cinematic soul music. Here’s a spotlight on 10 albums from a genre with blurred sonic borders but a definitive musical influence.
DJ Shadow – Endtroducing..... (1996)
As Endtroducing..... appeared in 1996, rap was exiting its golden age and beginning to reach the broader public. Meanwhile, with its obscure, murky samples, hip-hop beats and cinematic ambience, trip hop had upended the DJ/sampler approach. One imagines Josh Davies, a 24-year-old California DJ, as the offspring of these cultures, revolutionizing them by fusing an album exclusively using samples. Armed with MPC60 and two turntables, DJ Shadow unleashes a rich, exhilarating collage of every possible imaginable musical genre. Endtroducing... features Stanley Clarke next to the Beastie Boys, Metallica, Don Covay, Alan Parsons Project, Giorgio Moroder, T. Rex, The Isley Brothers, Meredith Monk, Funkadelic, David Axelrod and even Pink Floyd. But Shadow’s strength resides in the narrative power of his instrumental collages, because beyond the virtuosity of his golden fingers and the intelligence of his assemblages, the Californian is writing his own music and incidentally inventing a dazzlingly electronic instrumental hip-hop.
Archive – Londinium (1996)
After Massive Attack and then Portishead drew the blurry boundaries of trip hop, next came Archive… but that bronze medal couldn’t stop these Londoners from Clapham from equalling and especially standing out from their predecessors. With a less oppressive sound, Archive’s first album heralded a more climactic sound open to other genres. Underpinning the sensual, suave voice of Iranian singer Roya Arab and the MC flow of Rosko John, Darius Keeler and Danny Griffiths weave a dreamy soul on Lexomil, leaning on cottony hip-hop beats. With Karl Hyde of Underworld on guitar on four tracks and Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine playing godfather in the shadows behind his mixing board, the “instrumentarium” brings a powerful humanity to the atmosphere of this splenetic sound (the guitar of Headspace). And when the rapping steps up (So Few Words, Darkroom) and the torpor subsides, Archive maintains its soul above all.
Morcheeba – Big Calm (1998)
It’s impossible to dig into the postmodern soul of Morcheeba without the mind’s eye witnessing a parade of images… Two years after Who Can You Trust?, the second album by the London outfit, released in March 1998, is bursting with discoveries. Morcheeba does everything possible to shake the trip hop label off its back, with the music of Big Calm scanning other sonic genre horizons, from pop (The Sea, Blindfold) to reggae (Friction) to folk (Over and Over). As sensual as ever, the voice of Skye Edwards dominates this classy and magical record from cover to cover. Behind her, the colossal work of Paul and Ross Godfrey impresses with its precision, subtle, lush groove and impeccable craftmanship. The two brothers may be fans of 2,569 styles, but here, everything is beautifully channelled; instead of musical mood pieces, songs are the priority, as if trip hop were growing into adulthood by shaking off some burdensome sonic codes. With a cover inspired by the très lounge Hi Fi Companion by Ray Conniff and his orchestra, Big Calm transforms the dancefloor into a cocooning No Man’s Land and turns trip hop’s neuroses into welcoming warmth. A musical magic trick!
Massive Attack – Mezzanine (1998)
Ten years after their appearance, Massive Attack remain untouchable thanks to their singular aesthetic and sound. Yet with their third album, released in April 1998, 3D, Daddy G and Mushroom proved that their trip hop hadn’t fully blossomed… The Bristol group’s enduringly mysterious soul only grows darker and more ominous. Courtesy of 3D, a venomous cold wave creeps through everything, from unsettling opener Angel on through. Ambient dread and anxiety are ratcheted up to 10 in the vulcanized Risingson, while even the electro-metalloid Dissolved Girl lowers oppressively despite the elfin vocals of Sarah Jay. In the menacing yet sublime Teardrop, it takes a full minute for the appearance of the ethereal Liz Fraser, borrowed from Cocteau Twins (she also sings in Black Milk and Group Four), to loosen the tension and offer a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel… but the omnipresent electronica cannot prevent Mezzanine from remaining resolutely organic. The enduringly fascinating album was recorded without Tricky, and Mushroom would eventually depart over artistic differences.
Goldfrapp – Felt Mountain (2000)
As the whistled intro of Lovely Head unfurls, you’d think you were listening to an unreleased Portishead track. However, riding ambience right out of an old ‘60s soundtrack and a suspended sensual voice, the debut Goldfrapp album is no Dummy clone. The musical DNA of London duo Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory was identifiably from elsewhere. Admittedly, the singer had been swimming in the waters of trip hop for some time (sharing the mic with Tricky in Pumpkin on his album Maxinquaye), but with Felt Mountain, the cinematic ambitions she shares and unfurls with her multi-instrumentalist partner are in an entirely different register. Released in September 2000, the album seems obsessed with the lyricism and mystery of old scores from the ‘60s and ‘70s by Ennio Morricone, John Barry, Lalo Schifrin, Henry Mancini, François de Roubaix, Krzysztof Komeda and others. Less electronic than the competition, Goldfrapp revels in luxury and lust. There’s nothing depressive about this trip hop soundscape, just an invitation to surrender to Alison Goldfrapp’s soprano and Will Gregory’s powerfully dramatic compositions. To watch the sonic cinema screened by Felt Mountain, just close your eyes...
