After the international success of their previous album, Cuentos Decapitados, and the departing of drummer Miguel Sosa, the Ruiz Díaz brothers recruited a new drummer and took some artistic risks. The trio went forward, in a hardly explored way for Latin rock, mixing electronica and wild rock in a very personal way. You won't find here the guitar riffs that were one of the band's most distinctive marks; not even guitar amplifiers were used in the recording. And there is more: bassist Gabriel Ruiz Díaz, also in charge of the production, didn't play his instrument on the whole CD; instead he was in charge of synthesizers, samplers, and computers. To record the album the band built a peculiar recording studio in the countryside: each musician played and recorded their parts from different rooms and never got together to play as a band. The result is an energetic album that doesn't change the band's core.
Nine songs of this 11-track CD were composed by guitarist and singer Fernando Ruiz Díaz. His brother, Gabriel, composed and sang in "Opus 1," accompanied by string section. "Hechizo" is a cover from the Spanish band Heroes del Silencio that Catupecu Machu manages to make sound like their own harvest.
It proves that artistic risk and explorations can go along with an enjoyable album full of songs to learn and sing.
