New Order: From Darkness to Dance-floor

How does one Mancunian group move from perhaps the gloomiest band of the punk era to a master of the dance-floor? In the early eighties, straight out of Joy Division’s ashes, New Order marked one of the first successful unions of rock’n’roll and dance music. A perfect soundtrack for a morose, Thatcherite England.

Shooting Big Star

It took a short legacy of only two years and three albums for Big Star to enter the rock 'n' roll pantheon. Unsuccessful in the beginning of the 70’s, Alex Chilton and Chris Bell’s band is now acclaimed as one of the most influential of its kind.

Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits: A Love-Hate Relationship

On 14 April 2018, Dire Straits were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Even Mark Knopfler seemed touched by this honour, hoping to be handed the award by the likes of Bob Dylan or Eric Clapton. But in the end, Dire Straits moved into the pantheon of rockers without their star, which made for one of the saddest ceremonies in history. The absence was almost symbolic of the relationship between the lead singer and his group.
