A figurehead of the British prog rock scene with Genesis, Peter Gabriel later became a champion of world music and an example of the politically engaged artist, through his label Real World, his Womad festivals and of course the protest song “Biko”, etched into the history books and made famous from the Amnesty International tour concerts. To celebrate his entire catalogue arriving on Qobuz, let’s take a look back at a pop star not like the others.
“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK. Make way for “Cool Britannia”.
In 1982, at the height of his glory, the Boss surprised the world with “Nebraska,” a stripped back and entirely acoustic album. A timeless masterpiece bathed in echoes and reflections. An album that describes an America from the margins, and that many consider his best.
