Younghusband
Younghusband are an English rock group with a knack for pairing reflective lyrics with breezy, autumnal melodies rooted in psychedelia, shoegaze and krautrock.
Taking their name from Lieutenant Colonel Sir Francis Edward Younghusband, a colonial adventurer who appeared in the autobiographical travel book Seven Years in Tibet, the band was originally founded as a solo vehicle for singer/songwriter Euan Hinshelwood (New Shapes). He issued his first single under the moniker, "Could They Be Jealous of Us", in 2007, followed by a pair of EPs, The Judas Cow and Idiot Sun, in 2008 and 2009, respectively. The latter two offerings saw the group expand into a trio with the additions of ex-New Shapes bandmate Adam Lambert (drums) and Joe Chilton (bass), though Lambert was eventually usurped by former Mohair drummer Peter Baker. Engineer and guitarist Adam Beach, who was the boyfriend of frequent collaborator Emmy the Great, joined the band and made his debut on the 2011 EP Crystal, which marked the group's first outing for Sonic Cathedral Recordings.
The newly-minted quartet enlisted Deerhunter and Silver Jews producer Nicolas Vernhes to helm their full-length debut, 2013's fuzzed-out Dromes. Two years later they inked a deal with ATP Recordings and issued a sophomore effort, Dissolver, which was produced by Loop frontman Robert Hampson. Less psych-heavy than prior outings, the album embraced a more austere and minimalist sound that helped to illuminate the group acumen for songcraft. The band moved to Opposite Number for LP number three, the pastoral Swimmers, which was recorded in an old barn that Hinshelwood converted into a studio.
