Toy
Hyped to the eyeballs and cooler then school, Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong were billed as the saviours of British guitar pop in the late-2000s, only for their album release to be blocked and the group to be ridiculed as a hipster joke. Their implosion led to old school friends Tom Dougall (brother of Rose Elinor Dougall of The Pipettes), Dominic O'Dair (guitar) and Maxim 'Panda' Barron (bass) turning to dark, psychedelic rock and being reborn as TOY in 2010. Signed to Heavenly Records, they were championed by The Horrors and The Vaccines and a more measured amount of media buzz began to build again around early singles Left Myself Behind and Motoring. Inspired by the likes of Wire, Velvet Underground, Neu and My Bloody Valentine, debut album TOY (2012) came full of shoegazey, new wave soundscapes and earned an 8/10 review from the NME. The band went on to play their first headlining tour and support Primal Scream before returning with follow-up Join The Dots in December 2013.
