The Koreatown Oddity

Los Angeles-based rapper/producer Dominique Purdy creates bugged-out abstract hip-hop as the Koreatown Oddity. His raps alternate between fantasy narratives and pointed observations about daily life, often commenting on social issues. Purdy's tracks are deliberately lo-fi and trippy, and he releases almost all of his music, such as 5 Chuckles (2014) and Vivians (2015), recorded respectively with Ras G and Mndsgn, on cassette. He has issued the albums Finna Be Past Tense (2017), the autobiographical Little Dominiques Nosebleed (2020), and Isthisforreal? (2022) through Stones Throw. Purdy, also an actor, writer, and former standup comedian, began releasing tapes in 2012, and his vinyl debut was the 2014 LP 200 Tree Rings, which featured production by House Shoes, J-Swift, Giovanni Marks, and several of his fellow New Los Angeles members. Also that year, Leaving Records released 5 Chuckles, KTO's first full-length collaboration with Ras G. This was followed in 2015 with Vivians, produced by Mndsgn. After reuniting in 2016 with Ras G for InTheWrld, he landed a deal with Stones Throw. His debut for the label, Finna Be Past Tense (his second album to be released on vinyl), appeared in 2017, and was produced almost entirely by Vex Ruffin. Instrumental offerings such as A Beat at the Table, Rooster and That's a No from Me Dog were scattered across 2018 and 2019. 2020's Little Dominiques Nosebleed, KTO's second Stones Throw full-length, was an autobiographical account of his experience growing up in Koreatown, Los Angeles, as well as two automobile accidents that left him with constant nosebleeds and heightened his spiritual awareness. The stand-alone single "Breastmilk" appeared in 2021. Beat tape Trapped Rats and singles "Aggro Crag" and "Misophonia Love" were released in 2022, preceding the brief but cathartic LP Isthisforreal?
