Szabó Dániel
b. 1975, Hungary. Playing piano from the age of four, Szabo studied in Pecs, then Budapest. During the late 90s he won prizes in Lithuania and Hungary and at the Montreux Jazz Festival, performing there and at the IAJE conference in New York City. In 2001, he studied at the Henry Mancini Institute in Los Angeles and two years later attended New England Conservatory of Boston as a Fulbright scholar. There, he studied with Bob Brookmeyer and Danilo Perez, and graduated in 2005. During the last years of his studies he often performed, including gigs with George Garzone, Tim Hagans, Joe Lovano, Harvey Mason, Herb Pomeroy, George Russell, Maria Schneider and Frank Tiberi.
Szabo has continued to perform internationally, including spells with Rosario Giuliani, Eric Marienthal and Kurt Rosenwinkel, the latter appearing on Szabo's 2007 Warner Jazz debut Frictions. Szabo also plays in Mihaly Borbely's Barber's Shop, a band playing improvised music that blends jazz, classics and the ethnic music of the Carpathian and Balkans regions, and he has recorded with Tüzkö Csaba and Ágnes Lakatos.
