Johnny Cocoa
Promoting unity, this peace-loving, Corpus Christi, Texas-born, Beaumont-raised rapper fuses hip-hop and R&B while pushing his charismatic and characterful singing to the fore.
A combination of churchgoing and online streaming initially piqued Caleb Green's interest in music. Next, a friend invited him to write lyrics for a song. Green was so hooked and enamored by the writing process that he kept the words for himself, booking studio time to lay down a track. By 2017, he was wholly focused on a music career, self-releasing the slick and smooth single "Peanut Butter" as Johnny Cocoa. 2018's Taylor King-produced "Hustler's Heart" took an entirely different path with its comparatively minimalist, pared-down arrangement. Epik the Dawn assisted with 2019's "Pink Panther," while JP Soundz oversaw a companion single, "Back on My Shit," and both were issued that May.
As Johnny Cocoa's catalog grew, so did his confidence. While April 2020's "Stomp" was squarely aimed at the dancefloor, August's "Thuggin' by My Lonely" presented an introspective artist unafraid to highlight his own vulnerabilities. That track ultimately appeared on his debut EP, April 2021's To the World, a four-track project which also included "Letters from Itachi," a composition inspired by his favorite manga series, Naruto. He closed the year with the autobiographical "Johnny," and returned early in 2022 with "Southern Slang," a Houston-recorded collaboration with DJ Chose. Another declaration of confidence, "On God," ultimately became his signature song and was streamed over two million times by the end of the year. The track won Johnny Cocoa plaudits from many outside his immediate circle, including Drake, and also led to him being signed to Roc Nation.
His next project, a nine-track EP titled I Am Who I Am was released in November 2022, before being reissued the following March as a Chopped & Screwed version with OG Ron C at the helm. Only a few weeks later, he appeared on a pair of singles -- "Reach 4 the Stars" and "Tell Me What You Want" -- with his longtime collaborator Tago.
