Home Brew

Home Brew, also recognized as Home Brew Crew, is a hip-hop group hailing from West Auckland, New Zealand. The group comprises members Tom Scott, Lui Gumaka, and Harry "Haz Beats" Huavi, and is known for their grounded, satirical, and traditional jazz-rap style. Their initial venture, the Vintage EP, was influenced by iconic groups like A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul and over the following three years, the Home Brew Crew expanded their discography with four additional EPs: Home Brew Light (2007), Last Week (2008), Summer Ale (2009), and Taste Test (2009). In May 2012, they garnered critical acclaim with the release of their self-titled debut full-length album, which delved into intricate and political themes, addressing subjects such as drug use and alcoholism. Notably, it claimed the top spot on the New Zealand album charts in its first week, marking the first New Zealand hip-hop album to achieve this since 2003. Home Brew made waves at the 2010 New Zealand Music Awards, where they were shortlisted for the Critics Choice Prize, securing the Best Urban/Hip Hop Album award two years later, receiving nominations in four other categories, including Best Group and Album of the Year. After a lengthy hiatus, the group returned with compilation album B-Sides and Rarities in 2018, commemorating the 11th anniversary of their debut in 2023 with a reissue on vinyl and CD, announcing the release of second album, Run It Back, scheduled for December 8, seeing the title track quickly climb to number 10 on the New Zealand charts.
