Giant Rooks
Giant Rooks are an indie rock band with a pop sensibility and an atmospheric sound who became stars in their native Germany before developing an international following. Often performing in English, the group's arrangements blend organic and electronic elements. Their 2017 EP New Estate introduced fans to their streamlined sound, and a 2019 cover of "Tom's Diner" (a collaboration with AnnenMayKantereit) became a massive success in Europe. An added layer of production polish on their first full-length album, 2020's Rookery, made their songs even more user-friendly, and 2024's How Have You Been? added a romantic vibe to several of their songs.
Giant Rooks was formed in Hamm, Germany in 2014 by lead singer Frederik Rabe and his cousin, guitarist Finn Schwieters. They rounded out the lineup by recruiting keyboard player Jonathan Wischniowski, bassist Luca Göttner, and drummer Finn Thomas, and began playing locally. In 2015, they were accomplished enough to record and self-release their debut EP, The Times Are Bursting the Lines. Two years later, Giant Rooks teamed with Haldern Pop Recordings to bring out a second EP, New Estate. The title track and "Bright Lies" became successful singles, and Giant Rooks landed a deal with Irrsinn Tonträger, a German label affiliated with Universal Music and the venerable rock label Vertigo. Their first release for their new label was a four-song EP, Wild Stare, with the title track becoming a smash in Germany and a chart success in Italy. They followed this success with their first full-length album, 2020's Rookery, which included "Wild Stare" as well as two other popular singles, "Watershed" and "Heat Up." The album was well-received, and international touring followed. The group created new, spare arrangements of several of their songs for their more intimate shows; several of these songs appeared in the 2021 EP Rookery Live Tapes. In 2019, Giant Rooks teamed up with another German group, AnnenMayKantereit, to record a cover of Suzanne Vega's hit "Tom's Diner." The track became a smash in Europe, then charted in England, and in 2022 it cracked the American singles chart after the performance began circulating on TikTok. 2022 saw Giant Rooks tour the United States for the first time, and in 2023 they returned, first opening a run of dates for Louis Tomlinson and later as headliners. In 2024, the group released an EP, Pink Skies, which was a preview of their second album, How Have You Been? It was their first major release in the United States, where it was issued by Mercury/Republic Records.
