Francois Luambo Makiadi

Franco Luambo, also known as Franco, is the father of Congolese rumba, also known as Zairean rumba. His revolution began in 1955, when he formed the group OK Jazz for Orchestre Kinois de Jazz. This imposing figure kept Africa dancing until his death in 1989, but never really broke through in the West. The quintessence of a style that has since spawned many heirs can be found in the 2008 compilation Francophonic, Vol. 1: 1953-1980
