Groovy Aardvark
Hailing from Longueuil, Quebec, Groove Aardvark is a Canadian punk-rock band that formed in 1986 under the original (and controversial) name "Schizophrenic Muff Divers." The band's five co-founders — Vincent Peake, Danny Peake, Stéphane Vigeant, Eric Lajambe, and Marc-André Thibert — were all students at Cégep Edouard-Montpetit, and they released EPs like 1987's One Fine Day and 1991's The Late Race to Zero before unveiling their full-length debut, Eater's Digest, in 1994. Performing in both English and French, Groove Aardvark struck gold with 1996's Vacuum, a popular album that featured the Canadian radio hits "Dérangeant," "Le Petit Bonheur," and "Boisson d'avri." Two years later, the bandmates released Oryctérope, a record performed almost entirely in the band's native French. 2000's Fast Times at Longueuil High, 2002's Masotherapy, and 2005's Abuse Rendered all followed, with the band breaking up after Abuse Rendered's release. A reunion in 2011 found Groove Aardvark playing to large crowds at events like FrancoFolies de Montréal, although the band chose to focus on crowd favorites and archival material rather than record a new album. Years later, Vacuum was finally certified gold in 2023, showing the long-lasting influence of Groove Aardvark's music on Canadian listeners.
