Trio Marie Soldat

Named after 19th century violinist Marie Soldat-Roeger, Trio Marie Soldat plays on original instruments and uses historical-performance practices on standard trio repertoire from the Classical and Romantic periods. The Trio issued its debut recording in 2021. Trio Marie Soldat was founded in Amsterdam in 2017. Its members, brought together by a shared interest in historical performance practices on original instruments, are violinist Cecilia Bernardini, cellist Marcus van den Munckhof, and fortepiano player Keiko Shichijo. The Trio takes its name from violinist Marie Soldat-Roeger, a student of Joseph Joachim, who was an influential French violin school musician in the late 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries. Though few recordings of Soldat-Roeger exist, her playing is a basis of the Trio Marie Soldat's performance practices. The group has also worked with musicologists Neal Peres da Costa and Clive Brown to better its performance techniques. Trio Marie Soldat has toured throughout Europe, often taking time during its performances to discuss the practices used. In 2021, the group released its debut album, offering readings of Beethoven's Piano Trio in E flat major, Op. 70 No. 2, and Schubert's Piano Trio No. 2 in E flat major, D. 929.
