The Shelters
Rock & roll quartet the Shelters play a mix of fuzzed-out garage and swaggering glam rock with a tinge of melodic blues. With production by Tom Petty, their eponymous debut album arrived in 2016.
Formed in Los Angeles in 2014, the original lineup of the Shelters included Chase Simpson, Josh Jove, and Sebastian Harris. All three were credited as performers on Tom Petty's 2014 album Hypnotic Eye. Later, they incorporated bassist Jacob Pillot. In mid-2015, the project released the song "Birdwatching," which was included on a self-titled EP issued in October of the same year. The four-song set caught the attention of Steven Van Zandt, who named "Fortune Teller" the "Coolest Song in the World This Week!" on his radio show in February 2016. Petty invited the Shelters to support his band Mudcrutch on tour later that year. Petty would go on to co-produce the band's debut album, also titled The Shelters. It arrived on Warner Records in June 2016 and landed on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart.
After Petty died unexpectedly in 2017, the Shelters eventually regrouped and decided to rework “Strange” -- a song Petty was fond of but which didn't make it onto their debut -- for their second album, Jupiter Sidecar. With production by Joe Chiccarelli, it saw release in September 2019.
