Stanley Turrentine
Saxophoniste ténor américain né à Pittsburgh (Pennsylvanie) le 5 avril 1934, Stanley Turrentine a exploré différents styles de jazz dans un parcours associé aux labels Blue Note et CTI Records. Fils d'un saxophoniste et frère cadet du trompettiste Tommy Turrentine (1928-1997), il étudie le violoncelle avant de s'orienter vers le saxophone à l'âge de onze ans. Il fait ses débuts dans les groupes de rhythm'n'blues de Lowell Fulson avec Ray Charles (1950-1951), qu'il accompagne l'année suivante, Earl Bostic (où il remplace John Coltrane en 1953) et du pianiste Tadd Dameron, avec son frère. Après son service militaire et sa participation au quintette de Max Roach (1959-1960), Stanley Turrentine enregistre une vingtaine d'albums de hard bop et de soul jazz pour Blue Note, dont Look Out! (1960), Blue Hour (avec The Three Sounds, 1960), That's Where It's At (1962, avec Les McCann), Joyride (1965) et Rough 'n' Tumble (1966), ainsi qu'une douzaine d'autres, pour Blue Note, Prestige et Impulse!, avec son épouse, l'organiste Shirley Scott. Il emprunte une voie plus pop, marquée par la reprise de succès du moment, puis signe avec CTI Records où il rencontre le succès commercial avec les albums Sugar (1970), Gilberto with Turrentine (avec Astrud Gilberto, 1971) et Salt Song (1971). Il poursuit dans cette veine jazz funk et smooth jazz chez Fantasy et Elektra, puis retrouve Blue Note : Straight Ahead avec Jimmy Smith (1984), Wonderland (1986) et La Place (1989). Après des collaborations avec Kenny Burrell, Donald Byrd, Gene Harris, Abbey Lincoln, Horace Parlan, Jimmy Smith, Freddie Hubbard, Duke Pearson, Horace Silver, Les McCann, Jimmy McGriff, Roy Hargrove, Diana Krall ou Marlena Shaw, le saxophoniste termine sa carrière chez MusicMasters et Concord, aux côtés de Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, Kenny Drew et Grady Tate. Il décède d'un accident vasculaire cérébral à New York, le 12 septembre 2000, à l'âge de 66 ans.
