Lorenzo Micheli
Guitarist Lorenzo Micheli has performed almost worldwide, having appeared in 25 countries in Europe alone. He is active both as a solo player and in a duo configuration called SoloDuo with Matteo Mela.
Micheli was born Lorenzo Micheli Puoci in 1975. He studied guitar in Milan with Paola Coppi and then went on to the Tartini Conservatory in Trieste, graduating cum laude in 1996. Micheli won several competition honors, including first prize at the Guitar Foundation of American Competition in Charleston, South Carolina. That win brought Micheli the chance to tour some 50 cities in the U.S. and Canada as a soloist in the year 2000. That year also saw him make his recording debut on the Stradivarius label with an album of guitar works by Dionisio Aguado. Later that year, he moved to Naxos for a recital of music by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Micheli and Mela formed SoloDuo in 2002.
Micheli has been indefatigable as a concert performer, appearing more than 600 times. He has appeared all over Europe, in some 200 U.S. and Canadian cities, and in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Australia, both in solo music and as a concerto soloist. With Mela, he has appeared at such major venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, Seoul’s Sejong Hall, the Hall of Columns in Kyiv, Ukraine, and the Konzerthaus in Vienna, Austria. Micheli, mostly with Mela, has recorded for the Contrastes and Evidence Classics labels, in addition to Stradivarius and Naxos. For Evidence Classics, SoloDuo recorded an album of 12 sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, arranged for two guitars, in 2024. In addition to performing, Micheli is also a musicologist and an educator. He has edited three volumes of music for guitar duo, and he is the author of monographs on Aguado, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and Antoine de Lhoyer, among other composers. Micheli is on the faculty at the University School of Music in Lugano, Switzerland, and he has served residencies at the University of Colorado and at Columbus State University in the U.S. state of Georgia.
