La Folia Barockorchester

Germany's La Folia Barockorchester describes itself as "having the real guts for ancient music." This historical instrument group is based in Dresden and often performs little-known music from the Dresden court in the Baroque era. La Folia Barockorchester, or "La Folia Baroque Orchestra" (the German term is generally used), was formed in Dresden in 2007 by Robin Peter Müller, who remains its concertmaster and artistic director. The group is named after La Folia, a melody that served as the basis for numerous Baroque compositions and was associated with creativity and artistic freedom. The group focuses on the music of the Dresden court, which was highly influential throughout the Baroque era. La Folia Barockorchester performs music by such composers as Antonio Lotti, Johann David Heinichen, and Johann Adolf Hasse, and the orchestra devoted an album, Rediscovered Treasures from Dresden, to a group of anonymous manuscripts found in a cabinet behind the organ of the Dresden Hofkirche. Choosing not to weigh the album down with scholarly apparatus, the group left the identities of the composers uninvestigated. La Folia Barockorchester also performs music by major Baroque composers such as Handel and Vivaldi; it devoted its 2010 debut album, The Vivaldi Files, to the latter composer. In 2014, the group released the album Antonio Vivaldi: Concerti Furiosi on the Deutsche Harmonia Mundi label. La Folia Barockorchester has collaborated with major German orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker. Its size varies according to the project, ranging from a full late-Baroque orchestra to a chamber ensemble. The group's collaborators make up a distinguished list, including sopranos Dorothee Mields and Simone Kermes and viola da gamba player Hille Perl. In 2021, the group appeared at the Rheingau Music Festival, performing a program of Baroque opera arias in the Basilica of Eberbach Abbey with four vocal soloists. La Folia Barockorchester has recorded for the Stockfisch, Accent (where it backed contralto Julia Böhme on the album Seconda Donna), and Alpha labels, moving to Berlin Classics in 2024 to back bassoonist Sophie Dervaux on an album of Vivaldi bassoon concertos.
