Premier album de ce groupe américain emmené par Adam Duritz, songwriter dans la grande tradition de Dylan.
D’ailleurs, dans le hit, « Mister Jones », il chante « I want to be Bob Dylan » : comme ça, les choses sont claires. Les textes sont longs, symbolistes ou intimistes, chantés d'une voix attachante et le son du groupe est brut, simple et chaleureux : une basse, une batterie, une guitare et un Hammond, pimentés de temps à autres d'une instrumentation réminiscente du Band (accordéons, mandolines, etc.).
Le responsable de tout ça n'est autre que T. Bone Burnett, producteur (mais aussi guitariste et chanteur) de goût, souvent dans les bons coups (avec Elvis Costello, par exemple). Celui-ci en est un. Un sacré bon disque de rock américain teinté de folk, avec des bonnes chansons et un beau son.
