Avec l’argent du premier album (succès planétaire), les Counting Crows ont acheté des gros amplis de guitares qui font plein de bruit, des tas de pédales de distorsion, un Mellotron (qu'on entend dès l'ouverture du disque, et sur le très beau « I'm Not Sleeping »). Et le nouveau batteur cogne fort.
Du coup, Adam Duritz est obligé de chanter encore plus fort pour couvrir tout ce bazar. Il n’est ici plus trop question de Van Morrison, du Band, etc. C’est plus rock, plus bruyant, mais les chansons restent de grande qualité, comme les superbes « Long December » (classé dans le Top 10) et « Goodnight Elisabeth ».
Résultat : numéro un aux Etats-Unis ! Et disparition totale ou presque des écrans radars français.
