Cette impressionnante compilation présente 100 des 1 500 chansons que la légende du tango canción argentin aurait enregistrées durant sa carrière, et dont seules 970 d’entre elles sont connues. Les titres réunis ici proviennent essentiellement des enregistrements qu’il a effectués pour le label Odeon entre 1920 et 1935, soit la période ascensionnelle de sa carrière avant de prendre fin dans un accident d’avion, le 24 juin 1935. Ses premiers pas ont été effectués en duo avec José Razzano, qui, après avoir affronté des problèmes de santé à la gorge et développé un certain immobilisme, s’est retiré du devant de la scène pour, du moins au début, s’occuper des affaires du plus grand chanteur de tango que la Terre ait connu. Né à Toulouse et arrivé à Buenos Aires à l’âge de 2 ans dans les bras de sa mère, Carlos Gardel ne devint Argentin que tardivement, après être devenu citoyen de l’Uruguay, qui a longtemps clamé être son pays de naissance. Gardel ne niait pas cette information, car il voulait échapper aux obligations militaires dues à la France, alors en pleine Première Guerre mondiale.
Beaucoup de ces 100 chansons, principalement des tangos, quelques valses, milongas ou canción criollo, ont figuré dans l’un ou l’autre de la dizaine de films qu’il a tournés. Certaines ont marqué son histoire. Tomo Y Obligo est la toute dernière chanson qu’il a interprétée sur scène quelques heures avant de perdre la vie et Recordandote, composée par Gardel et écrite par Alfredo Le Pera, lui aussi passager de l’avion fatal, n’a été achevée qu’à titre posthume par son fidèle guitariste Terig Tucci et José Le Pera, frère de l’auteur. Certains de ces tangos ont également connu un succès européen à travers d’autres voix, comme Volver, chanté par Estrella Morente dans le film du même nom de Pedro Almodovar, ou Adios Muchachos, popularisé dans l’Hexagone par Tino Rossi et Claude François. On trouve aussi Madame Ivonne, le dernier tango enregistré par Gardel en Argentine en 1933, la suite de sa carrière discographique s’étant ensuite effectuée à Barcelone, Paris ou New-York. Ces 100 chansons perpétuent un parfum d’un autre temps, souvent corrigées par les moyens modernes de masterisation, voire entièrement, et dans ces rares cas, plutôt maladroitement réorchestrées, ce qui creuse un abîme entre les play-back et la piste de voix. Mais la majorité d’entre elles conservent un charme inouï qui rend honneur aux capacités vocales et à la formidable expressivité du légendaire « Zorzal criollo » (la grive créole), son surnom le plus répandu. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz
