Vidya Vox

Fusing smart electronic dance music and Western pop with a variety of traditions from her native Indian culture, Indian-American singer/songwriter Vidya Vox parlayed the popularity of her YouTube channel into a successful career as pop artist. Based in Los Angeles, Vox's early mash-ups of mainstream pop acts and Indian classical songs soon gave way to catchy original fare like the inspiring "Be Free' from her 2017 EP, Kuthu Fire. Born in Chennai, Vox (born Vidya Iyer) immigrated to the U.S. with her family at the age of eight and grew up in Virginia. She began learning Indian Carnatic classical music at the age of five while also taking in a variety of Western pop music. In 2015, while earning a biological sciences pre-med degree at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., she began to indulge her musical ambitions, starting a YouTube channel as Vidya Vox where she uploaded covers, created mash-ups, and began cultivating her own original mix of pop, electronic, and Indian classical traditions. Not long after the channel's launch, she earned significant exposure for her mash-up of Major Lazer's "Lean On" with the traditional Punjabi folk song, "Jind Mahi." During her first year, she focused largely on mash-ups and covers of mostly Western pop artists like the Chainsmokers, Ed Sheeran, and Rihanna. Beginning in 2017, Vox's original material became more prominent and she released her first EP, Kuthu Fire, which was co-written and produced by her musical partner, Shankar Tucker. Vox based herself in Los Angeles and continued to manage her YouTube content while releasing original singles like 2018's "Minnale" and "Kaadhal Thozhi."
