The Valentines
The Valentines are best remembered not only for charting two Top 40 hits in Australia during the late 1960s, but also for serving as an incubator for AC/DC's future frontman, Bon Scott, as well as Divinyls' future manager, Vince Lovegrove. The group formed in Perth, Australia, in 1966 and moved to Melbourne one year later. The Valentine's debut single, "Every Day I Have to Cry," was released in 1967 and reached Number 76 on the Australian charts, with the follow-up single "She Said" reaching Number 98 later that year. A self-titled EP, The Valentines, was released in 1968, followed in 1969 by a second EP, My Old Man's a Groovy Old Man. The title track became the band's first significant hit, reaching Number 22 in Australia and sending the single's B-side, "Ebeneezer," to Number 100. "Nick Nack Paddy Whack," a song co-written by vocalists Bon Scott and Vince Lovegrove, hit Number 53 in late 1969, with "Juliette" climbing to Number 28 in 1970. The group's bubblegum sound had largely fallen out of favor by this time, however, and The Valentines split up in August 1970. During the following years, Bon Scott found far greater success with AC/DC, fronting the band from 1974 until his death in 1980. Vince Lovegrove became a successful music journalist during the 1970s and began managing Divinyls in 1981, guiding the band as they released their platinum-selling debut album, Desperate, and its follow-up What a Life!
