The Ukiah Drag

Concocting a dark, swampy fusion of blues and doomstruck indie rock, the Ukiah Drag are a band whose roots are in the South but whose heads have migrated to the Northeast. The Ukiah Drag feature guitarist and singer ZZ Ramirez, guitarist and singer Brian Hennessey, bassist Andrew Eaton, keyboardist Nick Klein, and drummer Tommy Conte. Ramirez was formerly in the well-regarded Florida-based band American Snakeskin, and after they broke up, he relocated to Boston, where he fell in with fellow Florida exiles Hennessey and Conte. The three ended up sharing an apartment, and before long they were working on music together, with Ramirez contributing a batch of unheard songs originally intended for American Snakeskin. The Ukiah Drag soon recorded a pair of cassette-only albums using a lo-fi recording setup, Jazz Mama Is Cryin' and Variations of Candy, and began making a name for themselves with their powerfully atmospheric, evocative tunes. In time, the band relocated to Providence, Rhode Island, and Easton and Klein filled out their lineup. The Brooklyn-based indie label Wharf Cat Records gave the Ukiah Drag their first vinyl release with a March 2014 single, "Dirt Trip," backed with a cover of the Coasters' classic "Poison Ivy." Wharf Cat and the Ukiah Drag soon teamed up for the band's first proper album, In the Reaper's Quarters, which was released in September 2014.
