The Second Level

A chart-topping pop/rock group from Lithuania, The Roop rose to prominence in the band's homeland during the late-2010s before earning an international audience as participants in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. The group was formed in Vilnius in 2014 by frontman Vaidotas Valiukevičius (who had previously performed under the alias Milanno), Robertas Baranauskas, and Mantas Banišauskas. Although the band's debut album, To Whom it May Concern, stalled at Number 78 on the Lithuanian charts in 2015, The Roop became a Top 40 success in 2017, when the sophomore album Ghosts climbed to Number 34. "Yes, I Do," the title track from the band's 2018 EP, charted at Number 48 and marked the band's first hit single, although its success was dwarfed by the chart-topping smash "On Fire." Written by the three bandmates and released in 2020, the song was originally intended to be The Roop's submission to the Eurovision Song Contest. Although the event was ultimately canceled due to a global pandemic, "On Fire" went on to win Eurovision 2020 – das deutsche Finale, a televised Eurovision spinoff hosted by Germany. The Eurovision Song Contest resumed its annual competition one year later, and The Roop was picked to represented Lithuania once again. This time, the band's song was "Discoteque," which finished the competition in eight place and became The Roop's second Number 1 in Lithuania. "Discoteque" charted well in other countries, too, peaking at Number 4 in Belgium, Number 19 in Finland, and Number 23 in Iceland.
