Tagua Tagua

A project led by Brazilian musician Felipe Puperi, Tagua Tagua creates a sleek fusion of tropical soul, supple indie pop, and psychedelia. Formerly of the São Paulo space rock band Wannabe Jalva, Puperi launched Tagua Tagua in the late 2010s, building interest with a pair of EPs ahead of their 2020 full-length debut, Inteiro Metade. Tours of Europe and a handful of U.S. dates followed before Tagua Tagua signed with Brooklyn indie Wonderwheel. Leaning even more heavily into his soul and R&B side, Puperi recorded 2023's Tanto, a lush, sun-drenched collection of love songs. As frontman for Wannabe Jalva, Puperi achieved mainstream success in Brazil. Between their dynamic live show and 2011 debut, the band's popularity led to prominent festival slots alongside international pop and rock acts like Pearl Jam, X, Vampire Weekend, and the Rapture. After the group disbanded in the mid-2010s, Puperi began working on a solo project that borrowed some of the space rock and psych elements of his former band and married it with pop, soul, funk, and a distinctly Brazilian feel. Under the name Tagua Tagua, he released the 2017 EP Tombamento Inevitável, followed a year later by Pedaço Vivo. In 2019, the bright, funky single "Peixe Voador" was added to the soundtrack of the popular soccer video game FIFA 20, giving Tagua Tagua further exposure. The project's debut album, Inteiro Metade, appeared in 2020. Recorded and played largely by Puperi, the dreamy, soulful psych-pop set was mixed by his former Wannabe Jalva bandmate Tiago Abrahão. Tagua Tagua had already gained some traction at home, and they soon underwent a tour of Europe and headed up to play a run of shows at SXSW in Austin, Texas. Puperi connected with U.S. label Wonderwheel, which offered him a contract and released the follow-up album, Tanto. More relaxed and dreamlike, 2023's Tanto borrowed retro soul sounds and fused them with a brighter, more modern production aesthetic.
