Stone Horses

Hailing from Frederick, Maryland, Stone Horses specialize in old-school, guitar-driven music inspired by a continuum of blues and rock artists throughout the 20th century. It’s a tradition frontman John Allen knows a thing or two about, having served in modern rock acts for most of the 21st century that laid the groundwork for Stone Horses tracks like “Reckless Ways,” “Good Ol’ Days,” and “Free.”Before starting Stone Horses in 2017, Allen cut his teeth in alt-rock band SR-71, where he drummed, sang, and co-wrote from 2001 until their dissolution in 2010. (With frontman Mitch Allen, Allen wrote SR-71's retro pop-punk “1985,” which became an unlikely Top 40 crossover when covered by Bowling for Soup in 2004.) Later, Allen formed the hard rock quintet Charm City Devils, who notched several songs on Billboard’s active rock charts in the early and mid-2010s. During Charm City Devils' last tour, as an opener for Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, Allen met a teenage guitarist named Teddy Merrill and was impressed by his affinity for old-school rock and blues, taking him on for his next project.Initially, Stone Horses was going to emulate stripped-down duos like the White Stripes, with Allen singing behind the drum kit and Merrill on guitar. Ultimately, Allen decided to form a full band instead, serving as lead singer and rhythm guitarist. On the band’s self-titled debut EP in 2018, the lineup was completed by several members of Charm City Devils, including guitar riffs from Victor Karrera and the rhythm section of bassist Anthony Arambula and drummer Jason Heiser. The EP’s lead single, “Reckless Ways,” landed on Billboard’s mainstream rock chart. The band continued to release music into the next decade, like 2020’s Good Ol’ Days EP (featuring bassist Rick Reynolds in place of Arambula) and singles “Broken Hearts Broken Bones” (2021), “When I Get Paid” (2022), and “FAFO” (2023), the latter being their first release with bassist Dylan Howes. In 2024, the cream of this material was remixed and remastered into their first album, 2024’s Redemption Chronicles. Stone Horses promoted the release by touring with glam rock ironists Steel Panther.
