Softee

Softee's passionate synthesizer pop draws on quirky lo-fi indie electronica, '80s pop, and yearning R&B. Early tracks like 2019's lustful "Oh No" and the next year's lovelorn "Crush" (from her debut album, Keep On) proved minor breakthroughs, with the latter landing a TV placement before the arrival of Softee's second album and City Slang label debut, the more heavily R&B-infused Natural, in 2023. Softee's Nina Grollman grew up idolizing pop stars and singing karaoke in the basement of her family's home in Moorhead, Minnesota. She eventually put together a makeshift bedroom studio, first to record and share covers, then writing songs of her own, which she went on to perform with loop pedals in various New York City D.I.Y. spaces. Meanwhile, her love of performance also took her to Juilliard, where she studied drama, and then to Broadway, where she appeared in the 2018 revival of The Iceman Cometh (alongside Denzel Washington) and later as Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird (with Jeff Daniels). It was between those two jobs that she released her Softee debut, "Oh No," in May of 2019. The song's sultry living-room synth pop caught the attention of the indie music blogosphere and garnered hundreds of thousands of streams. She released her first EP, Slow Melt, that August, and joined the Mockingbird revival in November, replacing Tony winner Celia Keenan-Bolger. After her run in that show ended in March of 2020, Grollman completed her Softee full-length debut, Keep On, and self-released it in October. The single "Crush" was used in a 2022 episode of Queer as Folk, and Softee made waves at 2023's SXSW festival with performances that included backup singers and souped-up backing tracks. A record deal with City Slang preceded her second album, Natural, which saw release in May 2023. It featured guest appearances by rappers Namir Blade and Jordan Webb on one track and sampled TV's Squid Game on "Red Light Green Light."
