Seringai
Named after the Indonesian word for “grin” (or “grimace”, depending on your temperament), heavy metal band Seringai formed in Jakarta in 2002. After changing bass players, the band settled on the permanent lineup of vocalist Arian13, Ricky Siahaan on guitar, Sammy Bramantyo on bass, and Edy Khemod on drums. The band released its debut EP, High Octane Rock, in 2004. The title also serves as an apt description of the band’s hard-charging sound, which brings to mind the propulsive momentum of gut-punching bands like High on Fire and Motorhead.
Three full-length albums followed over the next 14 years: Serigala Militia in 2007, Taring in 2012, and Seperti Api in 2018. The band’s lyrics often take an anti-authority slant, relaying tales of unrest with the powers that be and preserving one’s individuality. Seringai’s lyrics, album, and song titles are all in Indonesian, and the band’s popularity mostly comes from its home country. A highlight came in 2013, when the band opened for Metallica at Jakarta’s massive Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
