Nikita Karmen
Nothing about Nikita Karmen's climb up the country-pop scene in the late 2010s followed a conventional narrative. To begin with, Karmen hailed from Australia, not the U.S., but she made the leap to America via Bobby Bones' touring company for his raucous syndicated morning zoo radio show. Bones' crew might be dubbed the Raging Idiots, but Karmen never played it dumb in her music. She stuck to sweet, sensitive, and melodic tunes that walked the line separating country and pop, much like the work of Taylor Swift and Maren Morris. This blend was showcased on her eponymous 2017 EP, and a series of digital singles in 2019 and 2020 found her sharpening her attack and honing her hybrid style.
A native of Sydney, Nikita Karmen grew up in a musical household alongside her identical twin, Desiree. Their parents both played in a band named Hotel Berlin, and their father taught Nikita how to play guitar when she was 15. Soon, the sisters were posting versions of Nikita's original tunes on YouTube. Eventually, Nikita began playing shows on her own, and in the mid-2010s, she headed to Nashville and began playing any open-mic stage she could find, along with auditioning for whatever gig that came her way. After a while, she returned to Australia, and it wasn't long before she received word that Bobby Bones and the Raging Idiots wanted her to accompany them on tour.
Karmen moved to Nashville, where she immersed herself in the world of professional songwriting and gigging, participating in writers' rooms in the day and opening for the Raging Idiots at night. Once her initial tour with Bones was completed, she signed a publishing deal with Black River Entertainment in 2016 and also began releasing her own recordings that year starting with the single "Out of the Park." A self-titled debut EP arrived in 2017, followed by "Nightmare" in 2018. A pair of digital singles -- "Our Thing" and "Gonna Die Young" -- arrived in 2019, then Karmen made the leap to November Records/EMPIRE. She released three singles on her new label in early 2020: "The Start of the End," "Even If You Missed Me," and "Came Close."
