Matt Wertz

Matt Wertz is a D.I.Y. singer/songwriter with a soulful, feel-good sound that combines alternative rock with acoustic folk and '80s and '90s pop and R&B elements. He issued a pair of independent albums before inking a deal with Nettwerk ahead of the release of 2007's blue-eyed soul-tinged Everything In Between. Subsequent efforts like Heatwave (2013), Gun Shy (2016), and Recently (2023) saw Wertz expand his sonic oeuvre with modern beats and textures that imbued his seasoned pop sensibilities with a neon sheen. Born and raised in Liberty, Missouri, near Kansas City, Matt Wertz started writing songs in his freshman year of college. Cutting his teeth at Christian youth group Young Life concerts and tour dates with Jars of Clay, Wertz independently released Somedays in 2001, followed two years later by 23 Places. In 2005, the EP Today & Tomorrow came out, and thanks to his constant touring, the singer, who had since moved to Nashville, was signed to Nettwerk Records. His album Everything in Between was issued in early 2007. Under Summer Sun, featuring some new material as well as cuts off Everything in Between, followed in 2008. Wertz returned in 2011 with both the studio effort Weights & Wings and the holiday-themed Snow Globe. He channeled his love of '80s pop music into 2014's Heatwave and added '90s-inspired beats and lush synths to his repertoire on 2016's Gun Shy, the latter of which arrived after a move to Los Angeles. Wertz continued to skillfully draw from the old and new schools of pop on 2023's reflective Recently.
