Martin Frawley

Recognized for a Jagger-esque vocal swagger and infectious lo-fi guitar pop with noisy fringes, Australian singer/songwriter Martin Frawley spent a decade as leader of Twerps before carrying over those qualities to a solo career. The comparatively stripped-down Undone at 31 marked his solo debut in 2019. He followed it with the more muscular jangle of 2023's The Wannabe, which found Frawley examining both his personal and professional lives through a wry lens. The son of singer/songwriter, guitarist, and Paul Kelly collaborator Maurice Frawley, Martin Frawley helped form Twerps in 2008, and the band's pleasantly ramshackle noise pop helped them become a fixture of the Melbourne indie scene over the next few years. Heavily influenced by the Kiwi jangle pop sounds of classic Flying Nun bands, Frawley and co-leader Julia McFarlane guided Twerps through two full-length releases. First came 2011's self-titled album, which broke them to a global audience, then its 2015 follow-up, Range Anxiety, built on that foundation in terms of artistic quality. Over the next couple of years, however, Frawley and McFarlane's romantic relationship hit the rocks and their ensuing breakup also served to end the band. Reeling from the sudden bevy of life changes, Frawley managed to navigate the wreckage and turn his journey into a new batch of songs, which he recorded with the help of producer Stewart Bronaugh (Angel Olsen, Lionlimb). Signing a solo deal with Twerps' previous label, Merge Records, Frawley released his more toned-down solo debut, Undone at 31, in February 2019. For the follow-up, he entered the studio with friends including Dan Luscombe (the Drones), bassist Nicholas Imfeld (Tyrannaman), drummer Steph Hughes (Dick Diver, Boomgates), and singer Dan Kelly. With songs that took aim at the entertainment industry, relationships, and Frawley himself, the resulting The Wannabe arrived on Trouble in Mind and Universal Music Australia in June 2023 with a looser, more robust sound than its predecessor.
