Marina Sena

Marina Sena is a pop and samba singer/songwriter from Brazil. In 2019 she formed the band Rosa Neon who released a self-titled album before dissolving in 2020. In 2021, she issued "Me Toca," her first solo single, a bouncy modern samba that charted and registered tens of millions of streams. She followed it with the bossa-tinged jazz ballad "Voltei Pra Nim," that enjoyed the same success and, that August, her debut album, De Primeira. Produced by Iuri Rio Branco (who also co-wrote several songs), the set, propelled by two pre-release singles and "Por Supuesto," won three Multishow Brazilian Music Awards. Her sophomore full-length, 2023's Vicio Inherente -- also produced by Branco -- focused on beat-conscious pop for the dancefloor. Sena was born Marina de Oliveira Sena in Taiobeiras, in the northern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Interested in music from the time she was five, she began singing and making up her own songs. As a teen she was obsessed with music and at 15 began formally composing songs. Two years later, she was selected as a contestant on La Voz Brazil. In 2015, Sena began singing professionally as lead vocalist of A Outra Banda da Lua, with whom she later released an album and an EP. After touring with them and several other musicians, she left the band and began working in clubs and recording studios. In 2019 she assembled Rosa Neon with Marcelo Tofani, Mariana Cavanellas, Luiz Gabriel Lopes and Baka. They played club dates and opening slots before entering the studio to record their lone self-titled album in 2020. Unable to tour due to the pandemic, they split later that year. A Outra Banda da Lua's eponymous debut appeared in 2020, though it had been recorded nearly two years before. They followed with the Catapoeira EP in 2021. Sena began working with producer and songwriter Iura Rio Branco that year. They self-released her first single, "Me Toca," in 2021. The track reached over 20 million streams on various platforms and won critical notice for its seamless meld of samba and dance rhythms and infectiously catchy melody. In June, she followed with "Voltei Pra Mim." Also co-written by the pair, the track balanced a 21st century bossa rhythm, Senegalese guitars, and dance beats. It garnered more streams than its predecessor and got plenty of club play from savvy DJs. She began guesting on recordings by other singers including Jean Tassy, Silva, and Illa. Sena's debut album, De Primeira offered ten varied cuts that ranged across the rhythms of bossa, samba, afoxe, choro, and funk, and combined them with dance mixes, R&B, guitars, percussion, and keyboards. Driven by its two singles and the hit "Te Vi Na Rura," her duet with Silva, it became a club smash, then registered popularly across the country. Sena won three Multishow Brazilian Music Awards for Best Experimental Artist, Revelation of the Year, and Album of the Year. In February 2022, she hit the pop charts with the slamming "Foi Match," recorded in collaboration with the production duo Hitmaker. The following month she duetted with Lagum on an alternate mix of "Veja Baby." That year, she also collaborated with Brazilian stadium rockers Capital Incial on the single "Natasha" she issued a truly psychedelic pop cover of Caetano Veloso's "Da Maior Importancia," and the collaborative single "Para Lennon and McCartney/Citaçao: O Vento" with the legendary Gal Costa, who passed away in November of 2023. In March 2023, Sena issued the ambitious pre-release single "Tudo Pra Amar Você." Co-written and produced by Branco, the cut wove dubwise riddims, electronics, brass, and bumping basslines around an intoxicating vocal. It became a club hit upon release. April saw the release of Sena's second long-player and Sony debut, Vício Inherente, a collection of modern jams for the dancefloor. Branco's kaleidoscopic production surpassed everything he'd done creatively before, adding blurry samples, layers of programmed beats, rhythms, and elegant textures, both organic and synthetic; they hold Sena's soaring voice inside them like a warm blanket. The album went to number three at streaming and charted in three countries.
