Las Robertas

San José, Costa Rica-based group Las Robertas build on the foundation of surfy garage rock, bringing in elements of dream pop production, indie rock tunefulness, and psychedelia. The band's sound grew more refined as they went, moving from the raw garage punk of 2010 debut album Cry Out Loud to the heightened production values and more thoughtfully arranged, but no less powerful, songs of 2023's Love Is the Answer. Las Robertas formed in 2009 with an original lineup of guitarist/vocalist Mercedes Oller, drummer/vocalist Fabrizio Duran, and bassist/vocalist Sonya Carmona. This trio form of the band quickly recorded the 2010 album Cry Out Loud, presenting a garage punk sound in line with bands like Dum Dum Girls, King Tuff, the Coathangers, and other groups in that camp of rowdy 2010s indie rock. The band toured internationally and made their next two albums, 2014's Days Unmade and 2017's Waves of the New, with producer Jon Greene. A different lineup of the band appeared on 2019 EP Together Outrageously. The set was released in celebration of Las Robertas being the first Costa Rican band to play the Coachella festival. With original member Oller still leading the band on guitar and vocals, the group had expanded to a quintet that featured lead guitarist Russell Davis, bassist Felipe Oller, drummer Santiago Roberts, and keyboardist Daniela Garcia. This version of the band began incorporating more retro-surf and garage sounds in among their moments of dream pop, and they worked for a long time perfecting fourth album Love Is the Answer, which was finally released in February 2023.
