Kofi Flexxx
Kofi Flexxx is a musical fusion project created and led by disguised multi-instrumentalist and composer Shabaka Hutchings (Shabaka and the Ancestors, the Comet Is Coming, Sons of Kemet). In addition to Hutchings, the core quintet comprises drummer Jas Kayser, bassist Daisy George, pianist Alex Hawkins, and flutist Ross Harris. They offer a heady meld of modern jazz, hip-hop, spoken word, and neo-soul. Their collaborators include a host of singers, rappers, poets, polemicists, electronicists, and instrumentalists. Live, Hutchings normally conducts a fluid cast that includes multiple reed, woodwind, and brass soloists, but he doesn't play. Kofi Flexxx's debut EP, In the Moment, Part 3, was cut in collaboration with American sound designer/composer Carlos Niño. Two pre-release singles appeared in August 2023, "Apothecary" (featuring Billy Woods) and "By Now (Accused of Magic)" with poet Anthony Joseph. Kofi Flexxx's debut album, Flowers in the Dark, included both tracks and was issued by Hutchings' Native Rebel Recordings label in September 2023.
