Kerri Chandler
Kerri Chandler has been among the most revered house artists since he debuted at the dawn of the '90s. He is noted as a pioneer of the New Jersey sound, a hybrid of garage and deep house with disco and gospel overtones. First appearing in 1990 with Super Lover, an independent EP with a title track that was quickly licensed to major-label Atlantic, Chandler has since released over 100 singles in addition to several full-lengths, mixes, and compilations, and launched the Madhouse, Madtech, and Kaoz Theory labels. He has frequently collaborated with fellow house producers Jerome Sydenham, Joe Claussell, and Dennis Ferrer, in addition to working with jazz/funk legend Roy Ayers on 2003's "Good Vibrations." Two volumes of A Basement, A Red Light, & A Feelin' collected Madhouse catalog highlights, while Chandler has commercially released mixes such as Watergate 15 (2014) and DJ-Kicks (2017). He issued Spaces and Places, an ambitious three-hour album recorded at different clubs throughout the world, in 2022.
Influenced by his DJ father and jazz musicians in his family, Chandler has been involved with music since childhood. The native of garage-central New Jersey was a club DJ by the age of 13, holding a residency at Newark's Club Zanzibar for several years. He began producing tracks shortly thereafter with help from fellow Jersey-ites like Tony Humphries and Michael Watford. Super Lover, his debut EP, was released in a small pressing by Express Records, and its title track was then issued by Atlantic Records, credited to Three Generations featuring Chevell. Chandler briefly collaborated with rapper Chino XL as the hip-hop duo Art of Origin, releasing two EPs in the early '90s before disbanding. Chandler's tracks for King St., Strictly Rhythm, Large, Nervous, and his own Madhouse Records made him one of the top producers in the garage scene by the mid-'90s, with a discography including club landmarks like "(You're My) Inspiration," "Hallelujah," and "Stompin' Grounds," as well as more introspective, jazzy works like 1993's Atmosphere EP. Chandler released the vinyl-only Hemisphere in 1996, and full-lengths with frequent collaborators Dennis Ferrer and Jerome Sydenham appeared around the turn of the millennium.
A Basement, A Red Light, & A Feelin' Vol. 2, containing mixed and unmixed discs, appeared in 2002. Chandler released the full-length Trionisphere in 2003, with mixes Soul Heaven Presents Kerri Chandler & Dennis Ferrer and Southport Weekender, Vol. 6 appearing before his next proper album, 2008's Computer Games. Chandler continued issuing new material in addition to compilations and remixes of earlier tracks like "Rain" and "Bar a Thym," while remaining globally in demand as a DJ. Contributing to two popular mix series, he released Watergate 15 in 2004, followed by DJ-Kicks in 2017, while 2018's 25 Years of Madhouse traced the history of his first label. He launched another one, Kaoz Theory, in 2015, and put out records by the likes of Jamie Jones and DJ Deep. In 2022, Kaoz Theory released Spaces and Places, a 24-track album of extended, mainly vocal-based tracks recorded at some of Chandler's favorite clubs, including Ministry of Sound, Output, and DC10.
