Joshua

US band formed by Joshua Pehahia (guitar/vocals) in 1981 after he had left Blind Alley. In the early days the line-up fluctuated wildly, with the exception of singer Stephen Fontaine, who possessed a vocal range of four octaves. Perahia and Fontaine, with two acquaintances, recorded the mini-album The Hand Is Quicker Than The Eye, in 1982. The title was suggested by one of the studio engineers, who noticed Perahia’s dexterity on the fretboard. After the album’s release, Joshua attempted to tour, but frequent personnel changes made this impracticable, and no more than four dates were completed with the same line-up. In 1984, Joshua were signed to Polydor Records in America with Perahia (guitar/vocals), Ken Tamplin (guitar/vocals), Patrick Bradley (keyboards/vocals), Loren Robinson (bass/vocals), Jo Galletta (drums) and Jeff Fenholt (lead vocals). Perahia produced the album and wrote all the song arrangements. Surrender was released in 1985 and offered classy American hard rock, but the European arm of Polydor was not interested, and its European release was handled by FM Revolver. Fenholt was left after the album’s completion, while Gregory Valesco joined them as vocalist for touring. Tamplin went on to form his own unit, Shout. Joshua then signed to RCA Records with completely different personnel: Perahia (guitar, vocals), Bob Rock (lead vocals), Greg Schultz (keyboards, vocals), Emil Lech (bass) and Tim Gehrt (drums). This membership recorded Intense Defence, which was slightly more restrained. Bob Rock’s input helped to raise the standard of the songwriting and their future looked bright. However, Rock, Schultz and Lech left the band after the recording was finished, and formed their own outfit, Driver.
