John Shough
As the chief engineer at Dayton, OH's Cro-Magnon Studio, John Shough worked extensively with Guided By Voices, sometimes appearing as an instrumental contributor on their albums under the alias "Johnny Strange." In addition, Shough worked on solo projects by both Robert Pollard and Tobin Sprout and produced the Breeders in addition to various local groups. In 1995, Shough began writing and recording his own songs as a side gig, drawing upon Beatlesque pop and various indie rock styles. After building up a catalog of over 100 songs, Shough's tapes landed him a deal with Big Beef Records, which issued his debut album, Ultra Vega, in late 2000. Shough then assembled a backing band featuring keyboardist Brett Owsley, guitarist Jeff Robertson, bassist Dennis Mullins, and drummer Todd "Tea Sea" Carll.
