Georgia
British singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Georgia writes passionate, urgent tunes that inventively combine influences such as house, new wave, and post-punk. After making her full-length debut with the grime-influenced electro-pop of 2015's Georgia, her songs became more club-friendly while losing none of their emotional impact. Seeking Thrills, her second album, arrived to critical acclaim in 2020, reaching number 24 on the U.K. album chart and earning a Mercury Prize nomination. She collaborated with artists like Gorillaz, Mura Masa, and William Orbit, then worked with producer Rostam on her third album, 2023's Euphoric.
The daughter of Leftfield's Neil Barnes, Georgia began playing drums at an early age and eventually studied ethnomusicology at London's School of Oriental and African Studies. She started her musical career as a session drummer, working with several offbeat British pop artists, including Kwes., Micachu, and JUCE. Encouraged by the support from her collaborators, she began working on her own material, and JUCE's Cherish Kaya released Georgia's debut EP, Come In, on Kaya Kaya Records in 2014. The EP introduced Georgia's distinctive (and unmistakably British) brand of underground pop, recalling the startling impact that M.I.A. and Micachu had on the music scene upon their debuts. In 2015, Georgia contributed to Leftfield's long-awaited third album, Alternative Light Source, singing on "Universal Everything." Domino signed Georgia that year and released her self-titled debut full-length in August.
After a brief absence, she resumed releasing singles with 2017's "Feel It," followed by "Mellow" (featuring Shygirl) and "Started Out" in 2018. She was featured on 2018 albums by Suicideyear and HONNE as well as Africa Express's 2019 full-length, Egoli. "About to Work the Dancefloor," an ecstatic dance-pop single, was met with critical acclaim, building anticipation for Georgia's second album. Seeking Thrills, an emotionally vivid album expressing euphoria and heartbreak through upbeat dance tunes inspired by early house and techno, arrived in early 2020. Georgia's chart breakthrough, Seeking Thrills was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize.
Remixes and collaborations with Jessie Ware, Mura Masa, and Gorillaz followed, and "Get Me Higher," a single with David Jackson, appeared in 2021. Georgia was featured on William Orbit's 2022 album, The Painter. Working with an outside producer on her solo material for the first time, she flew to Los Angeles and recorded her third album with Rostam (formerly of Vampire Weekend). Euphoric, a mixture of introspection and club ecstasy, arrived in 2023.
