Freddie Dredd

Rapper Freddie Dredd had been cultivating an online following for a few years when his fan base multiplied with the video-app virality of his tracks "Opaul" and "Cha Cha." Those online hits account for a very small percentage of the Ontario native's output, which includes full-length projects ranging from Dredd (2017) to the RCA release Freddie's Inferno (2022). Often grimy, woozy, and ominous, with overdriven basslines, Dredd's music is often tagged as phonk, as his productions -- credited to Ryan C., an abbreviation of his birth name -- take cues from the chopped and screwed and trap production styles birthed in the American South. At the same time, Dredd tracks are suffused with a wide variety of samples -- jazz, funk, bossa nova, pop, and video game music for starters -- that suggest omnivorous musical exploration and deep study of hip-hop's past. Originally from Durham, Ontario and based out of Oshaw, Ryan Chassels started uploading beats to a music-sharing site in 2014, using the name Ryan C. Rappers soon began seeking him for collaborations, and he developed a rap persona of his own, Freddie Dredd, gaining attention with an ode to popular television court-show arbitrator Judge Judy. Chassels was welcomed into the Doomshop and Sixset collectives, and he released the first two commercial Freddie Dredd EPs, God Is Wonderful and Snuff, by the end of 2015. Well over double that amount of material arrived in 2016, and in 2017, Dredd arrived as the first Freddie Dredd full-length. Having worked with other beatmakers, Chassels' Dredd material diversified, but it was with the self-produced "Opaul" (2018) and "Cha Cha" (2019), singles that went viral on social media, that he had his greatest success yet. Major-label RCA signed Chassels, who continued his busy release schedule with several singles, the Suffer EP, and the full-length Freddie's Inferno, all issued from 2020 through 2022.
