Errorsmith
Using self-built instruments and software, Berlin-based electronic musician Erik Wiegand makes wildly unpredictable experimental techno under the cheeky moniker Errorsmith. He first became known as one-half of MMM, a collaboration with Fiedel, which began releasing brash electro 12"s inspired by disco and funk, starting with the Elektro Cut EP in 1996. As with most of Wiegand and his collaborators' recordings, the record was self-released and distributed through Berlin's Hard Wax record store. Wiegand made his solo debut as Errorsmith with 1999's Errorsmith #1 12", followed by the full-length Errorsmith #2 in 2002. Both releases took his sound into more abstract, glitchy directions, stretching techno rhythms to their outer limits. Wiegand also collaborated with Frank Timm (Sound Stream, Soundhack) under the name Smith N Hack, debuting with a 2002 album titled Tribute, which featured a distorted image of disco pioneer Hamilton Bohannon on the cover. The album became a staple of left-field house DJs such as Erol Alkan and DJ Koze, and the duo followed it with a few subsequent 12"s. Additionally, Errorsmith documented his extensive touring of underground clubs with the 2004 full-length Near Disco Dawn - Live Recordings 2001-2003.
Wiegand largely stopped releasing music as Errorsmith for over a decade (other than a 2008 collaboration with Mr. Oizo), but he remained busy as part of MMM, who continued releasing well-received experimental house 12"s, and as an inventor and software developer. Wiegand's "additive synthesis" production software program Razor was released by Native Instruments in 2011, giving producers a chance to create buzzy, elastic sounds similar to his work. Errorsmith collaborated with fellow German pranksters Mouse on Mars on their 2014 album 21 Again, naturally titling their track "Errormom." Errorsmith and Mark Fell (SND) collaborated on an EP titled Protogravity, which was issued in 2015 by Bill Kouligas' Pan label. Wiegand also released released a split 12" with Addison Groove on Modeselektor's 50 Weapons imprint. In 2017, Pan released Superlative Fatigue, Errorsmith's first full-length in 13 years. Composed almost entirely using Razor, with two tracks additionally featuring a Roland TR-808 drum machine, the dancehall reggae-influenced album was met with critical acclaim.
