contradash

Contradash is a playful, pop-focused singer-rapper who builds on a background in graphic design to create a collage of sound that takes in hip-hop, R& as singles but also released a longer collection with 2020's ten-track EP all-star. Contradash was born Chase Blohm in Orange County, California in 1998. At school he excelled at sports, joining the all-star team in fifth grade, but his home life often dictated school moves, and his father was occasionally away in prison. Music making in his bedroom became an escape and a refuge and helped him stay out of trouble. In 2015, at age 17, he won a competition to meet Harlem rapper A$AP Ferg. The pair kept in touch and Blohm was soon working as a graphic designer for him. As his portfolio grew, he began to design cover art for Florida artists such as Dominic Fike and Nate Traveler. After leaving high school, Blohm flew out to meet many of those artists, spending time in a studio with Fike, who helped him hone his songwriting and production skills. In August 2019 he released the single "yo-yo" on his own neverstopdash label, and within weeks, Sean Lewow of Ourros and Dan Awad of Good Luck Have Fun had signed him to a management deal. The recording moniker that he chose, Contradash, was partially inspired by Canadian rapper Night Lovell's "Contraband." For the rest of 2019 he continued to record material in his bedroom. In January 2020, his next single, "blocked," sparked a flurry of interest among record labels when his online streaming figures increased 1,000-fold, reaching 250,000 in a matter of days. He signed with Interscope Records, which issued the single "white lie," which was a departure in the sense that it revealed a previously hidden pop-punk sensibility and, during its recording, producer Russ Chell taught him how to play guitar. August brought the Sage Roberge-produced "petal pickin'" before two more singles -- "cat out the bag" and "favorite color" -- were issued. In December, his debut EP -- all-star -- was finally released. It crammed ten tracks into 20 minutes, largely delving into R&B and hip-hop while taking a sidestep into indie rock on the track "Hi Neighbor." Over the next few years, Contradash steadily released new stand-alone singles. 2021 songs "triple check" and "Superficial" were released through Interscope, but by 2022 he was releasing his music independently again. New tracks "beep," "room number," and "hate your friends" arrived that year, and in March of 2023 he issued the new song "isabel."
