Clark Rundell
American conductor Clark Rundell was raised in Bloomington, Minnesota. He was a conducting student of John Paynter at Northwestern University, and he received a fellowship to work with Timothy Reynish at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Rundell has earned a reputation for being a quick study of difficult works, notably making his debut with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra by conducting Leonard Bernstein's Mass on 48 hours' notice. Rundell's repertoire extends from Classical to contemporary works, and he has conducted many modern operas, including Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring and The Turn of the Screw, Maurice Ravel's L’Heure Espagnole and L'enfant et les sortilèges, Leos Janácek's Káta Kabanová and The Cunning Little Vixen, and Kurt Weill's A Street Scene. Rundell is especially committed to promoting contemporary music, giving premieres of works by Louis Andriessen, Steve Reich, Mark-Anthony Turnage, James MacMillan, Steve Martland, and many others. He is also known for crossover collaborations with Elvis Costello, the Wayne Shorter Quartet, Cleo Laine, Brad Mehldau, Tim Garland, and Gwilym Simcock. Rundell is a professor of conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music.
