Butterfingers
Formed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1993, Butterfingers is one of the most popular grunge / alternative rock bands in their home country. Founded by Emmett (lead vocals, guitar), Loque (lead guitar), Kadak (bass), and Kalai (drums), the group originally formed when they were students at Malay College Kuala Kangsar. Initially a metal band, they changed their style to reflect the popularity of grunge and punk music. They recorded their first two-song demo in 1994 before recording several more demo EPs and mini albums including 12 goats, 6 oranges and 6 angels (1995), Butter Couldn’t Melt (1996) and Dragon (1996). They signed to EMI Malaysia and released their debut album, 1.2 Milligrams, in 1996. The album proved to be a success and earned them a Gold record. Their second album, Butter Worth Pushful (1997), climbed to Number 6 on the Malaysian Albums chart, and also earned Gold status. Their album Transcendence (1999) proved to be even more successful, climbing to Number 3 and earned them a Double Platinum Award. Their live and rarities compilation Butter Late Than Never (2000) was followed by Malayneum (2001), which didn’t sell as well as their previous studio releases. Vocalist Emmett left the group to continue his education in Canada. While the group had previously recorded all of their albums in English, their next studio release, Selamat Tinggal Dunia (2005), was recorded in their native Malay language. The album featured tracks such as “Ngilu,” “Daulat Tuanku,” and “Kabus Ribut.” A year after that album was released, Loque left the group in order attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. After the release of their 2008 album Kembali, Butterfingers went on hiatus as all the band members pursued other projects. The four original members reunited in 2016 for live performances and have continued to reunite sporadically but have not released new music since 2008. Butterfingers continue to achieve attention on social media thanks to classic tracks like “The Chemistry (Between Us),” “1000 Tahun,” and “Mati Hidup Kembali.”
