BLK ODYSSY

New Jersey-born, Austin, Texas-based soul singer/songwriter Sam Houston leads Blk Odyssy, a rough-edged R&B project that swings between celebratory smoothness and high-intensity songs of social critique and activist messaging. Houston drew from his own lived experiences of trauma and joy when writing his 2021 debut album, Blk Vintage. The erotically charged concept album Diamonds & Freaks followed in 2023, in addition to Live from Gold Diggers. Houston was born and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey, and made soulful Americana under his own name before moving into more rap and R&B territory with Blk Odyssy. Now located in Austin, Texas, Houston and his bandmates released their first Blk Odyssy material with the 2021 single "Big Bad Wolf/Sober," along with several other singles all included and preceding the August 2021 release of debut album Blk Vintage. Several songs on the record focused on the police killing of Houston's older brother, and how that traumatic event inspired an activist consciousness in him. In June 2022, Blk Odyssy teamed with funk godfather George Clinton and rapper Benny the Butcher for the single "Benny's Got a Gun." That song and several other previously unreleased tracks were included on the 2022 album Blk Vintage: The Reprise, an expansion of the group's 2021 debut. Before 2022 was over, Houston and company released a new single, "Lay Low." The studio full-length Diamonds & Freaks and Live from Gold Diggers both appeared in 2023.
