Amy Ukays
The Malaysian rock band Ukays experienced a tumultuous history that included a wealth of legal issues, lots of personal turnover, and releasing the best-selling album in the history of their country. The first formation of the group happened in 1986, and six years later, all they had to show for it were a pair of poorly performing albums. Everything changed with the release of 1994’s Bisa Berbisa, which set a new record for most units sold in Malaysia of any Malaysian album to that point. Although the album was packed with hit songs (“Siapa Yang Rampas Cintamu” and “Seksa” to name just two), there were issues concerning the payment of royalties, and the majority of the band left. New players were added to the roster and that lineup recorded 1995’s Tajam Menikam and 1996’s Panas Berpanjangan, which both sold respectably. However, by 1997 all but one member of the band left to form a different group, and the Ukays unraveled. They had a surprise hit over twenty years later with “Terpaksa Ku Lepaskan”.
