American Culture

Honoring the true outsider ethos of D.I.Y. music, Denver's American Culture plays an uncompromising amalgam of scuffed-up indie rock, classic college rock, and lo-fi punk, with bits of dub and Afrobeat thrown in for good measure. Led by former Bad Weather California frontman Chris Adolf, the band debuted in 2015 with the scrappy Pure American Gum, then returned after a six-year gap with the 2021 LP For My Animals. A lynchpin of Denver's indie music scene, Adolf formed American Culture in 2013 as his previous outfit was winding down. Inspired by his love of underground indie culture and a lifetime of gigging the American D.I.Y. circuit of house shows, makeshift clubs, and everything in between, he and his new group cut a series of tracks with K Records legend Calvin Johnson at his Dub Narcotic Studios in Olympia, Washington. Citing influences like the Jesus & Mary Chain, Dead Milkmen, and Wipers, the songs reflected the group's love of indie music's outsiders and misfits. Prior to the Olympia Sessions' eventual 2015 release, American Culture recorded their proper debut, Pure American Gum, for the Jigsaw label, which appeared earlier that same year. The band continued to gig and write new material, though their follow-up, For My Animals, didn't see release until early 2021, this time on Athens indie HHBTM Records.
