Akasha System

Akasha System is the "eco-techno" project of producer Hunter P. Thompson, otherwise known for making ambient and new age as Opaline and deep house as DJ Panthr. Releases such as 2019 LP Echo Earth feature dubby house rhythms and lush chords, often incorporating recordings from nature. He has continued the project with releases such as the slightly busier 2023 full-length Phytopia. Thompson began releasing shimmering, crystalline ambient cassettes as Opaline in 2012. Adding a rhythmic pulse to his already vivid tonal palette, he released a limited, handmade cassette as Akasha System in 2015. Digital EP Mixed Signals and two cassettes, Twin Optic and the 100% Silk-issued Vague Response, appeared in 2016. Two more digital EPs, Colour Theory and Swingman, as well as 12" EP Shadow Self (on Elestial Sound), were all released in 2017. After self-releasing a further digital EP, Temple Images, in 2018, Thompson recorded his debut album in his Portland home. Echo Earth appeared on 100% Silk in 2019, simultaneously released with a companion cassette EP titled Echo Lost. He also began releasing more club-friendly music as DJ Panthr. Akasha System's Epoch Flux EP, remix collection Echo Versions, and full-length Geomind were all self-released in 2020. The EP Ancient Path and full-length Deep Sea Transmission, inspired by Ian Urbina's book The Outlaw Ocean, appeared in 2021. Several non-album songs surfaced throughout 2022. After moving to Tampa, Florida, Thompson returned to 100% Silk with a trio of releases in 2023. DJ Panthr's Jade District LP appeared in April, and two Akasha System albums, the Phytopia LP and the Ancient Path Complete cassette, followed in May.
