When the first album from Micah P. Hinson came out in 2004, the Americana crowd was shocked by the almost unnerving maturity from the pen of this young Memphis songwriter. An early spell in jail probably imparted a lot of precocious wisdom to this new bard with an odd baritone voice which is always lingering at the edges of tunefulness. Wrapped up in a fairly minimalist instrumentation punctuated with an echo to lift it up, this melancholy writing is rooted in his wild years. Not a thousand miles from Bright Eyes, Smog, Sparklehorse, Silver Jews, Lambchop or Willy Mason, Hinson consistently finds a killer melodic move, a little heady motif that adorns these stories of broken hearts: to stunning effect. He's a sharp melodist first and foremost, who sparingly injects drops of piano, cello, flute, melodica or organ into the hearts of these miniatures. Years after its release, Micah P. Hinson & The Gospel Of Progress remains an elegiac summit of timeless country-folk, just as sombre as it should be. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

This disc is a re-release of a recording made in the studios of Radio France in 1986. It features three ragas, of 30, 20, and ten minutes in length. The ten-minute raga ("Dhun Man Pasand") was improvised by Shankar at the studio from international sources and is very dynamic and accessible. The longer ones, especially the 30-minute raga, require more work on the part of the listener, but repay the effort. The ragas feature Shankar on sitar, the masterful Kumar Bose on tabla, and two tampura players. The recording is good but not crystalline, with the tabla drums being recessed into the background. A very good disc. Not for the casual listener, but those serious about Indian classical music need not hesitate. ~ Kurt Keefner

The Third World is the initial session that mixed Gato Barbieri's free jazz tenor playing with Latin and Brazilian influences. It's also the album that brought Barbieri positive attention from the college crowds of the late '60s. He would expand on this musical combination with his next few Flying Dutchman releases as well as his first recordings for the Impulse! label. The records made between 1969 through 1974 find Barbieri creating a danceable yet fiery combination of South American rhythms and free jazz forcefulness. Strangely, once Barbieri signed with A&M, he began making commercial records geared to fans of Herb Alpert, sounding nothing like his earlier albums. ~ Al Campbell

Africa - Released November 15, 2004 | Buda musique

A bunch of brass instruments repeating an overpowering melody, supported by jerky and rippling rhythms. It’s already irresistible, but when Mahmoud Ahmed’s sensual singing starts, ascending and descending this mountain of groove without ever losing breath, the listener approaches an ecstasy that continues throughout the following tracks. It was through this disc, which gathers recordings from 1975, that the Western World discovered Ethio-jazz and its emblematic crooner. Distributed for the first time in 1986 by the Belgian label Crammed Records, this collection of treasures, gathered by producer Francis Falceto, stirred up the enthusiasm of the press and of the lovers of the nascent phenomenon of World Music. But this success was stifled in Ethiopia, until 1991 and the end of the dictatorial regime, which took a dim view on this disheveled national representation. It took another ten years and the initiative from the Buda label to accompany Falceto in his ambition to re-release, through the collection Ethiopiques, the entirety of the masterpieces produced in Addis Ababa during the golden age of this music, at the start of the 1970s. The success of the unique blend of local music, rhythm ‘n’ blues and jazz has been growing steadily since. It has revitalized the career of its most valid actors and generated vocations among young musicians. © BM/Qobuz
